Safety Sex in Thailand
Take precautions if you plan to participate in “pay-for-play” in Thailand. Thailand has the highest HIV/AIDS prevalence in SE Asia with around 500,000 HIV-positive people.
Around 10% of all new infections are caused by sex workers or their clients. STIs are common, with 90 cases per 100,000 people ( 1).
It’s safer to ban a girl for paying a prostitute in the street from a bar than it is to hook up with a free-lancer at a nightclub. Most bars have policies that require their employees to undergo sexual health testing on a regular schedule.
Summary
In Thailand, it is easy to buy a company.
If you’re looking for a bar hostess to join you for drinks and conversation, or for a companion in your hotel for the night, any of the estimated 250,000-2 million sex workers working in Thailand would be more than happy to oblige.
It is easy to avoid this aspect of Thailand’s vibrant nightlife. Red light areas are small and limited to the main tourist attractions. Many families visit Thailand and never see this side. They prefer to mix with the Thais working elsewhere.
