Preparation takes time
Time is one of the main reasons that NASA needs to know the trajectory of an asteroid. Johnson and his team will need several months, and sometimes even years to implement their plans. They don’t even have Bruce Willis to call to dig a hole and plant a bomb. The longer they know about the problem, then the better chance they have of finding a workable solution.
