The fallout would be too great

Johnson and his team are working on different ways to stop the asteroid. The most obvious tactic would be to use a sophisticated space missile that carries a large nuclear payload in order to explode the giant asteroid. The space rock will disintegrate once the missile hits the target. His analysis indicates that the asteroid would break up into smaller pieces, causing destruction to fall on Earth. There’s also the risk of nuclear fallout.
