13. Roland Stares at the Sheriff
Grady spoke in a typical Southern gentleman’s fashion: friendly, but with steel underneath. He praised Roland Redding. The man, who was wearing a brown suit with a white button-down, shiny loafers, and wore slick shoes, was very short.
He was balding and his face was puffy. His cheeks were reddened by the heat. Grady concluded that he looked like a lost man.
His demeanor changed the moment he saw Grady.
14. Roland Says He Is Sorry
Grady and Roland met their gazes, and Grady noticed a flicker in Roland’s eyes. He then became oily and cajoling. “Apologies, Officer. “I am not feeling well, and I have important things in my vehicle.”
“Your car’s broken down. Grady did not correct his usage of “Officer” and the man would probably leave quickly.
Grady had hoped that he would not.
