33. Grady Knows What?
His neck hairs were standing up. As a child, he had felt the same way before lightning struck dad’s pickup. He felt the same way in Kuwait, before a GBU exploded. He felt this way even before Marianne miscarried. He felt this way before Marianne lost a pregnancy.
Grady stepped towards the man about to take the microphone.
Two men stood facing each other. The background was silent.
34. Grady Tries To Interject
Grady started to say “Get off of the…,” but was interrupted.
A voice said, “Let him talk.” Butch Carmichael was the voice. “Let him speak! Let him speak!”
The chant was heard throughout the town hall. Grady watched Merriview scream at him and demand they let this man speak, this stranger. As he watched his wife join in the chants, his heart broke. Grady felt he had missed an opportunity to make a point. He put his hands up and backed away, letting Roland speak.
