21. Roland makes his presence known
The first two weeks went by without Roland making trouble. But the man was a bad penny.
He just kept turning up.
Grady saw Roland chatting up the cashiers at the local supermarket. Grady saw him on a walking tour of the town’s historic square. The festival was just getting ready for its annual Merriview 4 th July Festival. He saw him buy everyone drinks at the tavern. The man would wave at him enthusiastically every time he saw Roland. Grady returned the wave halfheartedly despite his discomfort at the man’s constant presence.
22. Roland Makes Friends
Hank had not yet fixed Roland’s vehicle, but it appeared that the man planned to stay in town regardless.
Marianne asked, “I don’t know why you’re so upset,” as they sat on the couch together watching X Files. Everyone knows that you don’t care for him.
Grady considered denying the truth for a moment. Everyone knew Roland’s name and he was getting along well with them. He had made a huge impact in such a short period of time.
