Nenet, Siberia
Location: Yamal Peninsula, Siberia
Around 10,000 nomads travel in trains that can be up to 8km long, moving 300,000 reindeer over 1,100km, covering an area more than twice the size of France. They do this at temperatures as low as minus 50°C. The nomads travel in 8km-long trains on sledges that are anointed by freshly slaughtered reindeer. They are adapting to increased contact with the outside world despite the discovery of oil reserves in the 1970s.
Future outlook: They are adapting themselves to the natural, social and political changes around them, bucking the trend that global nomad groups are vanishing.
