Chimbu Skeleton Dancers, Papa New Guinea

Location: Chimbu Province, Papua New Guinea
The skeleton dances of this tribe were originally performed to intimidate rival tribes, in a highly territorial and hotly contested country. The tribe is so remote, little is known of their lives. They live in a temperate mountain valley between 1,600m and 2,400m in rugged terrain. They traditionally lived in segregated male-female houses, but are now sharing with families.
Future Outlook: As tourism interaction increases, dances will be performed more by people who are part of the community and less by those in remote settings.
