Dogons of West Africa
Location: Mali (West Africa)
Men use ropes made from baobab bark to scale the Bandiagara cliffs. They collect pigeon and bat guano to be sold as fertiliser. And they also collect Tellem artefacts that are sold to Western collectors of art. Around 700 villages are perched precariously along the 200km cliff edge. More than 400,000 people live there.
Future Outlook: Although the tribe used to thrive on tourism dollars, recent unrest and poor crop yields have made life difficult for them.
