Thessaloniki (Greece)
In recent years, there have been many reasons to visit Greece’s second city. The local food scene has received UNESCO recognition and the Modiano Food Market was recently renovated and reopened.
Thessaloniki, with its beautiful beaches and mountains inland and the popular waterfront, is one of Europe’s top city breaks.
What would make it better? What about a new, gleaming metro system? If all goes well, the first line of a megaproject to connect the city’s center with its airport should be opened in November 2023. The driverless trains will transport passengers through tunnels that have been excavated to add to Thessaloniki’s rich archeological catalog. Many of these discoveries will be displayed in specially designed museum stations. – Barry Neild
