Vilnius, Lithuania
In an advertising campaign this year, Vilnius’ self-deprecating attitude admitted that no one really knows its location. The capital of Lithuania will celebrate its 700th birthday on January 25, 2023.
A packed calendar of events is being organized to mark this milestone. These include music festivals and art exhibitions. Use the anniversary to encourage you to visit, rather than follow a strict program.
The city center has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, putting it on par with fellow V-cities Vienna and Venice. Vilnius is on the list because of its Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque structures, all arranged on a medieval road plan. But it’s most famous for its Baroque architectural style.
You can climb the bell tower at St. John’s Church for panoramic views of the city. Or visit the giant crown-topped church of St. Casimir. Have you got an eye for social networks? Hot air balloons are allowed to fly over the skyline of this capital city, which is unique in Europe. JB
