Charleston is a city that celebrates its history like no other US cities, but often it glosses over the history and contributions of its Black residents. It has been working to correct that.
The much-delayed International African American Museum is expected to open at the end of June.
It will be located on the Cooper River shoreline, where many Africans set foot for the first time in North America. The museum will focus on the lives of slaves as well as their descendants.
The world-renowned Spoleto Festival, which takes place in early June, features opera, theatre, dance, musical performances and artist talks.
The Charleston Wine and Food Festival, held in March, is a great place to try the Lowcountry’s best.
Try Magnolias for a taste of the South. It was opened in 1990 and helped to spur the culinary revival of the city. Bertha’s Kitchen is a casual restaurant in North Charleston that serves red rice, sausage and fried chicken. The restaurant was featured in Michael Stern’s book “Roadfood”. Forrest Brown.
