Oaxaca is located in Mexico
Mexico’s culinary heritage is as rich as its Mesoamerican archeological treasures. In her CNN series “Searching for Mexico,” Eva Longoria explored many distinct flavors.
Longoria’s visit to Oaxaca is a great opportunity to explore the rich culinary tradition of this state. Oaxaca also produces the majority of mezcal in the world.
Street food favorites include tlayudas (also known as Oaxacan Pizzas). The large corn tortillas are layered with lard and beans, Oaxacan traditional cheese, pork, and other toppings like avocado and tomato. The state is renowned for the seven mole sauces it produces, which can include a variety of ingredients ranging from chocolate and dried fruits to chiles and toasted sesame seeds.
Mercado Benito Juarez, located in Oaxaca city, is one of the many markets throughout the state that sell items like dried chiles and fresh produce. They also have handicrafts, crunchy grasshoppers, and other products. Santiago Matatlan offers tours and tastings of mezcal, the state’s most popular drink. – MH
